What’s in Your E-juice or E-liquid?

When it comes down to it, as people living in the time that we do, we like to know what it is that we are putting into our bodies. Long gone are the days where we just consumed products because a famous actor on television told us it was good for us. We are much more involved with and aware of the different ingredients in all the products we use, e-juice or e-liquid is no different to anything else.

Vaping and e-cigarettes haven’t been around a long time, the opinions of many health professionals are positive if a little hesitant due to not being able to any serious long-term studies. But, we do know what the ingredients of e-liquid are, and it is a very short list. E-liquid or E-juice or vape juice, whatever you know it as, contains only 4-5 basic ingredients, compared to traditional cigarettes which have almost 4,000.

So, what the main ingredients in e-liquid, and what do they do?

Vegetable Glycerin – Vegetable Glycerin or VG is a sweet, thick liquid made from vegetable products. VG is what creates the vapor, the higher the VG, the bigger the clouds of vapor will be. By itself, VG is very thick, which makes it harder to vape alone which is why it is normally mixed with VG. Most e-juices are available with either a 20/80, 30/70, 50/50, 70,30, 80/20 or 100% VG mixture.

Propylene Glycol – Propylene Glycol or PG is part of the mixture which makes up the main components of e-liquid. It has no taste and is used to carry the flavor because it is much thinner than VG. E-liquids with a higher percentage of PG give vapers a stronger throat hit, much like a traditional analog cigarette.

Flavoring – This is where e-liquid gets fun! You can choose from thousands of different flavor options, or create your own. Some of the popular choices are Candy, drinks, desserts, foods and even tobacco flavors.

Nicotine – Nicotine is optional, normally available in 18mg, 12mg, 6mg, or 0mg strengths. Many vapers start off high, then transition down to zero.

CBD – Cannabidiol is HUGE right now. This hemp marijuana extract, or CBD oil is known to help with pain and anxiety among a list of other awesome health benefits. It’s also legal in all 50 states as long as it does not contain any THC.

THC – Cannabis concentrates and extracts are infused into e-liquids making them perfect for those who can’t smoke or just prefer discretion. Add your favorite flavor mix and you’re good to go. Pineapple-banana haze all day. Go green.

Vitamins – Yes, there are vitamin e-liquids.

Herbal Infusions – I’ve seen a number of herbal e-liquids but the one I bought was an e-liquid by Slippy Syrup called Stonehenge that contained Damiana and Kava Kava. You can also buy Kava Dabs which are awesome btw.

Caffeine – Caffinated e-liquids, ecigs and e-hookahs are available but I haven’t personally tried any of them.

Water – Water is rarely used. However, it is sometimes used for diluting strong or thick e-liquids.

Alcohol – Sometimes this is used in the flavoring concentrates.
